A Smooth Exit
Remember Brexit? That is still a thing, by the way. There still hasn't been a comprehensive deal between the UK and the European Union. Since the referendum in 2016, the UK government led by Prime Minister Theresa May and the EU Commission have been working on an agreement for the terms for the UK leaving the EU. The negotiations have been hindered by opposition from members of the EU Commission and especially from the opposition in the UK.
Today (14th of November) the UK parliament discusses a proposition for Brexit terms by May's government. Many are concerned that this deal would end in more favorable terms for the EU. If this is the case, the UK would keep significant obligations to the EU while having little say in EU's decision making. The negotiations have seemingly favored the EU so far, with significant leverage over the terms of the deal while May is facing opposition domestically.
If no deal is reached, the UK will leave with no deal on 29th of March 2019, if both parties don't agree to extend that deadline. Every day, this seems more and more likely.
Burning Land
There have been massive wildfires in California, US, this wildfire season. At least 48 people have died as a result of the fires. Yet another year of record-breaking fires, accelerated by climate change. I watched a news report, where one individual said how it seems like the fires are getting worse and worse, but they don't really know why. Climate change directly makes wildfires worse, as warmer temperature leads to more moisture evaporating from the environment.
I've talked plenty about climate change on this blog, so I won't go in to it further now. I just hope that politicians are forced in to aggressive action against climate change soon, hopefully before the effects become utterly disastrous.
Conclusion
There wasn't much action in the news this week. Some other stuff that happened: Trump banned CNN reporter from White House, Trump was mad at the French on Twitter and comic legend Stan Lee passed away.
Thanks for reading!
Thanks again for the comprehensive piece of news recap. It seems that Brexit will be around (and has been) for quite a long time as both parties can't reach common ground. I actually can't understand the ignorance from people who don't know why on earth are there wildfires and it kind of pisses me off..
ReplyDeleteThanks for the news recap! Trumps comments about the fires are....oh so great to read too. Make America Rake Again
